Types of Surgeries to Stop or Cure Snoring
When it comes to snoring everyone wants to find a solution to stop snoring and many turn to surgery for the answer. Surgery has become quite common as a medical solution to stopping snoring today. That is because it is very effective and has long lasting results, but essentially it either reduces the snoring so that it is bearable or it stops it altogether.
The most common surgery for snoring is the uvuloopalatopharyngoplasty – a very long word that essentially means that your throat is cleared of any blockages so that you have no obstructions when you sleep and so that you do not snore. This surgery - usually referred to as UPPP which is much easier to pronounce - removes parts of the soft palate and uvula along with the tonsils.
Most people prefer the laser UPPP surgery that is does not remove the uvula but instead it shortens it but the soft palate is removed. This laser assisted surgery or LAUP is a less invasive surgery performed with local anesthetic and is also less expensive than a traditional UPPP that is done with anesthesia. The laser assisted UPPP is considered safe and is a terrific solution to curing your snoring if you can afford it.
Another type of surgery that has been used for stopping snoring is called palatal stiffening of the soft palate. This surgery induces scar formation on the soft palate so that the palatal flutter is shortened and therefore your snoring is reduced as well. This surgery has short term positive effects and the invasiveness of the procedure is minimal. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia and is affordable as well.
Radio frequency ablation is another procedure that projects energy to the soft palate that will stiffen it to form scar tissue the same as the palatal stiffening procedure. One drawback is that this requires more than one treatment – usually severally on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia but it is inexpensive and less invasive than any other procedure.
All of these procedures have shown definitive results that work well in most cases but every individual is different so you should take all the procedures into consideration and select the one that is most suitable for you. As with medical procedure, you should seek advice from a physician before determining the type of surgery that will fulfill your needs.
